The tour opened at Cumnor, who have proved tough opposition in the past. Gnome batsmen were relishing the challenge of facing the Middlesex quickie Simon Cook only to learn that he had left the club. Even so, batting first in a 40-over match, Gnome were soon two wickets down for 27, with Dave Straker dismissed for 9 and Anton for 0. Click here for the full match report and scorecard
Then came the core partnership of the innings, with Nick Godfrey scoring a sumptuous 77 and Mark Feltham 49, taking Gnome to 142-2. Gnome stuttered at that point, losing Nick and Mark in quick succession, followed by boundary-throw run outs to account for Jezza (8) and Barney Clargo (1). Danny Gillman (13) and John Dunthorne (12) moved the score to 180-8 but with 15 balls left, Gnome were still some way shy of the 200 they were hoping for.
Enter Matt Cannon, who hit 12 before Fenton was stumped for 1, leaving Gnome on 205 with 3 balls left. Pete Gillman and Matt took a leg bye and a single. Pete then faced the last ball, from the Cumnor opener C. Ricks, who at that point had gone for just 26 runs. Pete drove Ricks' last ball back over his head for 6, bringing cheers of astonishment from the Gnome spectators, and taking the Gnome total to 213 for 9.
If Cumnor thought that 214 was a reachable target, they were soon disillusioned. Matt Cannon and Anton had the Cumnor openers back in the pavilion with the score still on 0. In short order Cumnor were 26-5, with a sensational diving catch at gully (and instant catch of the season contender) by Dave Straker accounting for danger-man Ricks for 7.
Despite a modest Cumnor rally, they were all out for 101 in the 29th over. Matt Cannon posted another COTS contender, sprinting back from mid-on to catch a steepler from the Cumnor no 8 over his head. Sadly a number of other catches were downed or not even attempted (no names, no packdrill) before Pete Gillman (the main sufferer) took the final wicket. Of the Gnome bowlers, Anton (3-8) and Fenton (3-12) had the best figures, with one each for Danny, Pete and Barney. Gnome's victory margin of 112 runs is the biggest it has recorded against Cumnor.
