Ramroop vs. Ramroop: Confusion reigns as Gnomes go down to second defeat of the season.
A rare loss of direction and - especially - batting cohesion cost Gnome their second defeat of the season at new fixture Harrow & St Mary's.
The day started auspiciously enough with a gut-busting noon barbecue, Chez Ramroop (many thanks Andrew, Oma and Dave) and at the ground we found ourselves received with extreme cordiality and hospitality, a cunning combination, which evidently threw the Gnome batsmen into a state of terminal confusion. Indeed a degree of confusion had infected the pre-match organisation with the result that Gnome turned out with 12 players. With the agreement of the opposition Gnome rotated its personnel so that Gill did not bat, but bowled and fielded and Dunthorne J batted but did not field (thus freeing himself to umpire throughout almost the entire H&St.M innings).
Skipper for the day, Tom Godfrey, won the toss and with a 40 over match agreed, and a side that comprised almost our strongest potential batting line-up (acknowledging the absence of Cannon), including himself, Fenton and Anton at 9, 10 and 11, respectively, had no hesitation in batting first. On a verdant, but not too badly behaved wicket, the Gnome batsmen put on the kind of performance over which anyone with tact and a knowledge of literary cliches would wish to draw a "discreet veil."
The bowling was varied and clever, without ever being as downright dangerous as Gnomes strived to make it appear. The least troubled of the Gnome batsmen was Nick Godfrey, who made a stout 57, at number 5. Set piece of the day was the bringing on of Dave Ramroop to bowl at his dad, Andrew. This also included the champagne moment of the day when Jr. clean bowled Sr. off what umpire Straker ajudged to be a no-ball. Andrew went on to make Gnome's second highest score, of 26. With no other Gnome batsman being able to settle and no other significant contribution, Gnome were dismissed for 168, with 8.1 overs left to bowl.
Needing just 4.225 runs per over for victory Harrow & St Mary's responded in a largely controlled and measured fashion. The only significant pressure was exerted by the Westminster School strike duo of Jez Kemball (3-32), and Mark Feltham (2-22), but not even the awarding of an lbw decision by Dunthorne (an event as rare as discovering a lost Leonardo in your attic) could save Gnome and the experienced batting of Ramroop Junior and Sharma Senior, saw the home side to victory by 4 wickets.
