GNOME vs. WASHINGTON - WON by 7 WICKETS
Gnomes moved smoothly to their 9th win of a very positive season against a previously unbeaten Washington Team at Queens on Sunday 7th July.
Skipper Cannon won an important toss and inserted Washington on a damp and two paced wicket. Brilliant strike bowling by Jezza and Anton kept Washington on the back foot and fine catching by Twiggy saw Washington reduced to 80 for 4 off 30 overs by lunch.
Shirley's array of pies and Cannon's jugs (shandy) saw a post-prandial lethargy from Gnome which allowed Washington back into the match. Aussie 'Dale' crafted a fine innings of 80, assisted by a spilled chance by JD at mid-off. However a classic dismissal, Twiggy's leg break to the left handed Dale and Tommy's smart stumping, woke up the slumbering Gnomes to retrict Washington to 213 for 8 off their 50 overs.
Gnome set about the reply positively and were always well in touch with the 4 an over required for victory. The loss of Chris Lear at 24 brought together the 'mature and experienced' pairing of Dunthorne J and Cannon who proceeded to silence Anton's chum from SA. When JD was run out for an unheralded 50 and Cannon stumped for 77 the match was looking beyond a tiring Washington attack. The only note of panic in the Gnome camp was when some of the waiting Gnome's batsmen learned that their partners had been seen in the Versace retail outlet at Bicester.
Tommy and Dave Straker stroked the ball about to reach the total with eight overs to spare - TG applying an outrageous reverse pull to score the winning runs. Gnome's unused batting consisting of Mark (8000 runs) Feltham, Twiggy (not out this season), Jezza (average 72), MVD, a.n.Ton and Slasher Bracken showed that this powerful all- Gnome team could happily have chased a far bigger total.
PS: Shirley is offering alternative batting and fielding lunchtime menus for our next Queen's game (Lemmings on the August Tour). Skipper Cannon has major problems for the Kent Tour next weekend - ie What's the Batting Order?
