Gnomes
began at Cumnor, scene of tough encounters in the past. In a 35-over match,
Gnomes were soon reduced to 6-2 with Max Fernie and Tom Godfrey –
who played on – soon back in the pavilion. Then Ollie Dunthorne
and Danny Gillman – scoring fluently, and clearly enjoying his break
from the Cornish Premier League – put on 112 in 22 overs for the
third wicket. Danny was caught in the deep for 57, to be replaced by Matt
Cannon who rattled a quick-fire 35. Ollie scored the second 50 of the
innings before he was bowled and Mark Feltham and Barney Clargo saw the
total through to a challenging 192 for 6.
Although
Fenton took a wicket in his first over, Cumnor made an assertive response
and for a period were up with the run rate. But they lost wickets steadily,
with the Gillman father-and-son duo taking the next five between them.
Star batsman Brown was beautifully caught by Mark on the square-leg
boundary and Barney make a superb chasing overhead catch, Pete benefiting
as bowler both times. Fenton came back for a second wicket and Matt
Cannon took another two to help close the innings. Cumnor were all out
for 144 in the 32nd over, bringing Gnome victory by an unexpectedly
wide margin of 48 runs. Pete had 4-25, Matt 2-12, Fenton 2-8, Danny
1-12.
