GNOME
TRIUMPH IN HARROW RUN FEAST
Gnome avenged last year's two-wicket defeat at Harrow St Mary in a thrilling match which saw 460 runs scored off just 68 overs. Gnome were inserted in a 35-over match and scored at a steady rate, reaching 77-2 with Bunty Khan out for 7 and Andrew Ramroop 15. Tom Godfrey, skipper for the day, then pushed the score along with Jezza until Tom was lbw for 64. Jezza batted through the innings with a nifty 69 not out, supported by Banstead guest Ted Bellow (29) and a rapid 49* by Twigs Sellwood, taking the Gnome score to 247 off their 35 overs - and setting Harrow St Mary an ask of just over 7 per over. Harrow St Mary had a reputation as a strong batting side and Gnome had a weakened attack with the usual openers, Anton and Fenton, both missing. At 94-3 off 16, Harrow were a long way behind the rate but then accelerated, with their number 3, Ray Eisenhammer, playing the core innings. On
25 overs Harrow were ahead of the game on 175-4, needing 73 off the last
ten, but then cracked under Gnome pressure, well marshalled by skipper
Tom. The Harrow number 6, Tony Wright, another key batsman, was sharply
caught by Jezza off Mike Vandrau for 15. As Twigs Sellwood tightened the
screws with his near-unplayable mix of spin, Eisenhammer began to run
out of partners. He was finally panicked into running himself out just
after notching his Pick
of the Gnome bowlers was Twigs with a devastating 2-12 off his 7 overs.
Jezza had 2-30 off 6.3 and there was one wicket each for Mike Vandrau,
Pete Gillman, and Andrew - a special victim for him, since he had his
son David A special thanks too to the Ramroop family for their splendid barbecue before the match - it was just a pity that not more Gnome players were able to attend.
