'RATTLED
RODENTS IN RETREAT"
Lord Gnome avenged last year's defeat against Lemmings at Queen's College Oxford on Saturday. Batting first on a dry hard wicket after winning the toss Gnomes innings went very much in 'fits and starts'. 56-0 after 9 overs became 95-5 after 21 with 49 of Gnome's runs coming from an aggressive innings by Ollie Dunthorne. Curious incidents abounded: Matt Cannon struck a ball which spun back to hit the middle stump quite hard but failed to dislodge the bails, Lemming players claiming (falsely) that Matt had used loam from the wicket to secure the bail when marking his guard. As usual when Tom Godfrey's fan club turn up there is bound to be disappointment: Matt Cannon: errr…. (pause)…. Come One Tom Godfrey: errr…. (pause).. (followed by sound of stampeding buffalo) (much shouting…clatter of stumps…roar of joy from fielding side) MC: Sorry Tom!! TG: ……….!!!!!! Gnome recovered well to reach 193 all out. This was largely due to the 'Tent Boys' - Ollie (49) Barney Clargo (32) and their protégé Max Fernie (28). They proved conclusively the old adage that camping, lager and curry is still the best way to get the runs on tour! A cameo from Anton consisted of 'Driving Range Practice' ie trying to hit the ball in precisely the same place without moving the feet. This arrangement suited Lemmings as after four attempts they had positioned their best fielder in the place that Anton was now reaching with some consistency - 3 yards inside the boundary. The Lemming innings started dramatically with Anton getting the opener Myers LBW in the first over. Showing their new found competitive spirit ( courtesy of South Africa ) Gnomes moved in for the kill. With support from Fenton and Matt Lemmings were reduced to 28 for 5 in the tenth over - stunning slip catches from Twigs (yes, the famous shirt designer) and Matt 'soft hands' Cannon ( rumour has it that he got these doing washing up adverts ). Tight bowling
from Justin Rhodes ( 9ov 4m 22r 1w ) and the Gnomes and Lemmings enjoyed a convivial chat and beer in the evening sunshine. Groundsman Martin was congratulated for creating a good wicket and his wife for producing magnificent lunch and tea. |
