GNOMES
LOSE TO PELICANS - TEAM HIT BY INJURY CRISIS
Gnomes, looking for revenge after a bad-tempered two-wicket defeat last year, lost comprehensively to Pelicans at Nag's Head Meadow on Sunday. Gnomes did haul themselves back into the match at a late stage but, just as against Beddington, it was too little, too late. The match was played in a friendly spirit but two Gnome players suffered injuries which could keep them out for a month or more. In a time game, John Dunthorne won the toss and elected to bat. But although a series of early batsmen looked in good shape, none went on to play a decisive innings. John made 6, Mark 23, Matt Cannon 39 - including 4 4s in successive balls, Chris Lear 10, Jezza 10. At this point Gnome were 95-5. Buddy Mason now played the best Gnome innings, striking 67 before being bowled. He was supported by Anton with 16, Fenton 10, and Pete 5* - Buddy and Pete putting on 56 for the 7th wicket in 8 overs, with Buddy hitting some big sixes and Pete scoring just 4 of the partnership runs. With tea fixed at 4.45pm, Gnome batted 39 overs for their score of 203-8. Pelicans
made an impressive start, losing their first wicket at 81 and their
second at 179. By this time both John and Fenton were off the field.
Fenton suffered a back strain while bowling and John suffered a deep
split between his 4th and 5th finger of his left hand, caused by a valiant
attempt at a diving catch. As impromptu captain, Matt shuffled the bowling
pack Jezza had a stunning 2 for 34 in 6, Buddy Mason had a breathtaking 1-13 off 4, Matt Cannon a sensational 1-21 off 5.1, and Chris Gill an unbelievable 1-36 off 7. No need to mention anyone else. MEDICAL NEWS Although
John's injury was dressed at the ground, he learned the next day that
he had fractured the finger, which was reset under a general anaesthetic
on Tuesday. He is likely to be out for around 6 weeks. Fenton meanwhile
had a severe back injury and was likely to be out for several weeks.
