GNOME
FRUSTRATION AT BARNES COMMON AS VICTORY SLIPS FROM THEIR GRASP
Gnome had a frustrating match against Barnes Common as they got themselves into winning positions several times but failed to clinch victory. This was doubly irksome as Gnome were looking for revenge following their defeat at Barnes earlier in the season. Barnes won the toss and batted on a hot afternoon. Fiery bowling by openers Matt and Anton removed the Barnes top three for 52, including the previous century-maker Harry Walpole, caught at deep fine leg by Matt off a premeditated Anton bouncer. Matt had previously taken an fine running overhead skier at deep square leg. Then tight bowling by Pete and guest Jonty Rhodes pinned Barnes back, so that after 20 overs – mid-point in the innings – they were 87-5, Justin having secured two lbw verdicts from the Barnes umpire. When Ollie Dunthorne took the next wicket, leaving Barnes at 108-6 after 24, Gnome seemed on top. But aggressive if chancy batting for the Barnes 7th wicket lifted the score to 174 in the 30th over. Barnes were finally all out off the last ball of their 40 overs for 206. Guest Jack Drinkwater had 3-40. Matt, Anton and Justin had two wickets each, while Ollie had one. There were four excellent catches in the deep: two for Matt, one each for Justin and Ollie. When Gnome replied the Dunthorne father-and-son combo made an assured start, taking the score to 90 off 20 and providing a solid base for the second half of the innings. John D was out for 48, followed shortly by Ollie for 46, but with Anton and Matt batting strongly victory was still on the cards. Anton, who had hit three massive sixes, was caught in the deep for 27 while going for a fourth. Matt and Mark Feltham took the score to 163, requiring 44 off the last six. Then came double disaster. Having hurt his knee fielding, Matt was batting with Ollie as his runner. Mark drove a fierce shot into the off which seemed destined for the boundary. But it was brilliantly fielded with both batsman stranded and Mark was run out. In the next over Matt fell to a fine second-attempt caught and bowled. Rhodes hit three fours before being bowled and the Gnome tail offered little resistance. Gnome were all out for 179 in the 38th over, losing by 27 runs. *NB that Gnome were playing with ten men. Please note that if you do drop out at late stage, as happened on this occasion, you must be certain that you have informed the match manager. Sending an email without ensuring that the manager has received it is sadly not enough. Please use the telephone! By the time the manager knew we were a man short it was too late to recruit a replacement. |
